Ocean Beach, a small Southern California beach community which is part of and apart from the greater San Diego metro area, is located 10 minutes northwest of downtown San Diego on the northwest section of beach along the Point Loma Peninsula which stretches south around the entrance of the San Diego Bay across Mission Bay within view of Sea World.

Ocean Beach, with a population of approximately 13,500 residents maintains a unique character and independent identity as a friendly neighborhood hang out because of it's geographic location, which makes it less accessible than other popular beach cities on the Pacific Coast, especially during rush hour.

Ocean Beach is an unpretentious beach community where there is great pride among local homeowners in Ocean Beach where a strong surfing influence provides a haven for barefoot flower children of the 1960's. The Ocean Beach Pier, the longest commercial pier on the west coast offers a restaurant with great views and free fishing. Most shops are locally owned and managed. Ocean Beach has an impressive selection of antique stores, dining, shopping, and cultural venues in an area small enough for homeowners to walk to, and still enjoy access to all the benefits of one of America’s finest big cities. Ocean Beach offers visitors the best of both worlds, access to the big city, and an escape from the big city.

Ocean Beach Transportation

The main artery in OB is Sunset Cliffs Boulevard which provides homeowners with easy access to Interstate 8 and Interstate 5. Newport Avenue is the main street in Ocean Beach. Interstate 5 provides access to all of San Diego County's world class shopping, dining and cultural opportunities as well as just about any kind of employment options available in America today.

For homeowners who are fortunate enough never to have a need to travel beyond the confines of the peninsula, a beach cruiser or skateboard will suffice.

Ocean Beach Culture

Ocean Beach Farmer's Market, located at the 4900 Block of Newport Avenue offers fresh, locally grown and produced, quality food, baked goods and flowers every Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. To get there, take Sunset Cliffs Boulevard then go west on Newport Avenue. There are also free concerts during the summer. The Christmas Parade & Street Fair are also local favorates.

Ocean Beach Recreation

Ocean Beach offers a beautiful, sandy, ocean beach with fire pits, a Municipal Pier, and a variety of outdoor activities including: surfing beneath the pier, bicycling, swimming, tennis and golf. Dog Beach allows homeowners to bring their pets and let them roam free, without a leash.

Ocean Beach History

Ocean Beach began in 1887 with Frank Higgins and Billy Carlson, two real estate developers.  The marked lots in the area and sold the land during a big mussel roast on the beach.  The town began development at the beginning of the 20th Century.  It's Wonderland Amusement Park on the beach started drawing major attention and grew to become a part of the 2nd largest city in the state, San Diego.  Many of the history in Ocean Beach has been preserved including the antique buildings, and that is by demand of the public.
